What’s hot in home décor?

Why should we use home décor trends?  Why should we use home décor trends in our homes? Some of us are comfortable with our homes just the way they are. Thank you very much. We love our comfy old chairs, our kitchens our clutter.

May I suggest that we look at these trends with an open objective mind? There may be something here that sparks an interest. I don’t know about you but in my home a fresh coat of paint is always needed in at least one room. This could be an opportunity for us to explore and reach beyond our comfy clutter.

So what are these trends? The first trend is inspired by nature. These are constant comfortable colors. Next, White’s Hot! I’ll show you ways that this trend can create a warm feel in our homes. To contrast this, the trend is influenced by the global marketplace. In this trend we think of all cultures, religions, and art. Here the confluence of our world comes together. But I’ll confess the biggest trend I see is you and this is the one I find most interesting so I’ll hold that for last.

Natural Inspirations: I’m sure we all have a vision of moving, of selling our homes and searching for a new one. When selling, what were we told held the widest appeal? Neutral colors. We had to get rid of that rust colored rug and the avocado-colored appliances. What appealed to us for our new home? Was it the neutral move-in look?

This trend has broad appeal and is timeless, restful and is sparked with soothing hues of nature. Although this time there’s a twist. These natural inspirations travel the Umbrian hills for our sun-kissed orange, we pull the blues and greens of water from a spa, and the brown is from the coca plant. Let’s face it everyone loves – chocolate.

With the natural inspirations trend we now bring the outdoors in. We bring in the leafy green plants and the warm glow of the sun. At the very least we frame our view of the outdoors to bring that into our homes

Here our neutral pallet is updated yet still provides us with the fresh soothing colors from nature.

White’s Hot: Why? There’s nothing new with the White room. It was first done in the Rococo period and has been done and done again. Years ago I remember seeing a living room that the Ali McGraw did in all white. This was back in the 70’s.

So, what why’s it so hot? Paint and rug manufacturers are featuring this as today’s new look. While I was doing research for this project two home décor magazines had covers featuring an all white room. That’s hot. So what’s the twist, what’s so hot with white?

What’s hot is the simplicity and airiness of this look. It’s clean, calm and pure. The white room of today will flow through a pale pallet of white tones. Let’s take an imaginary trip with this palette. Think of the sun bleached beach. At first glance it appears white. But then when you take that calm slow walk you realize that it isn’t really white. The sand is beige, cream, gray, pink and even black. The shells too that liter this beach aren’t really white. Pick one up look at it what color is that shell really. Think also of a white of the pearl. Certainly, it’s white but it has an iridescence of blues, pinks, peaches and even green.

Iridescence is key in this pallet. It’s new it’s hot. Somewhere in today’s white hot room there must be an element of iridescence. Note the wall covering here, the iridescence of this paint swatch. For this look it’s key.

So, how can this pale pallet be made warm? Why isn’t this trend cold like the ultra contemporary room that’s saturated in white? Here’s why, note the mixtures of texture in both selections of home fabrics. There is a there’s a warm comforting upholstery fabric.  There’s an airy drapery or pillow fabric. There is silky tactile trim. The mixture of tones and the mixture of textures is what makes this warm trend white hot!

World Bazaar: In this new trend we see the brilliant colors of the sun, the earth, of Asia, India, Africa, Europe and, yes, even the US.  All of these are blended together, mixed yet matched to create a look of visual interest. Here we’re surrounded by a look that holds exotic cultural stimulation yet one is encircled by warm calming hues.

Our borders have opened up to the world marketplace. We’re now spoiled with elegant silks from China. These silks are embellished with exquisite embroidery from India.  New worlds are explored in the calming Asian influence of Buddhism and feng shui.  Bamboo is exotic yet grows wildly even in our climate. The prints of African animals are mingled in this room opposite the early American painted chest. These treasures from each culture are all layered to create a tapestry that’s a mixture of the world bazaar.

When I dream of this look I’m reminded an old movie. The setting is the smoky gentlemen’s den. Here we’d see the animal skin rug, the leather books and chairs even perhaps a globe. The room would be embellished with treasures of travel abroad.

Today our world is bigger than ever. This look explores just that. Every culture can be mixed and mingled with the back drop of hot engulfing color that is at once soothing and stimulating. For me this is the new traditional!

We come to our last trend and that’s you.  We come to our last trend and that’s you. This is the best trend yet in home decorating. YOU What do you love?  What makes your heart sing? This is exactly what you need to surround yourself with.

No longer should we hear the designer or decorator come in to your home and say. Oh no this won’t do! We’ll have to get rid of this and that. This won’t work for the look I’m after. If that person enters ask them to leave.

Your home is your sanctuary. Your decorator or designer should ask how you live, about your needs, and the needs of your family.Your home should be a reflection you. This is the best trend in home decor YOU.

So, with all these trends floating about in home décor why upset the applecart? Why change the comfy old clutter that’s truly you. Well, hopefully we’re all constantly evolving, changing and being exposed to new and changing worlds. Perhaps these new trends and these fresh thoughts could just be the opportunity to explore and reach beyond our own comfy clutter.

Would you like help applying one of these trends to a room in your home? Would you prefer something that uniquely reflects you? Give me a call. We’ll create a beautiful comfortable interior just for you
